The Wellington Botanic Garden has been confirmed as a Category 1 historic place by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, in recognition of its 162-year continuous landscape and significance to the capital's identity.
The protection covers the original 25-hectare reserve, the Lady Norwood Rose Garden, and the historic Founders' Entrance. Botanic Garden curator Tom Anderson said the listing would not change how the garden is used, but would "shape every conversation we have about new buildings and infrastructure for the next generation."
The decision follows two years of consultation, including with Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Wellington City Council.
